The first thing most people are going to notice is the price. The Kindle 2, the older model now that the Kindle DX is out, still runs for about 260 dollars.  However, the brand new Sony PRS-600 is purported to be releasing at about that same price. The aggressive pricing clearly shows that Sony is looking to get in on  people who still aren’t will to shell out almost 500 dollars for a Kindle DX, but who want something newer than the Kindle 2. Sony also states that they will be matching  the 9.99 dollars price for new releases and best sellers, further proof of their willingness to compete with Amazon. For the money Sony is asking, they certainly  appear to be offering something quite significant.

One of the features worth looking into with Sony’s new electronic book readers is the touch screen feature. The only other e-reader where this feature is found is the 1000-dollar FLEPia. The touch screen allows you to take advantage of additional space where buttons would usually take up. This indicates that the device would then be lighter and a bit smaller. The screen is about 6 inches in size, and a mere 10 ounces. Its thickness is about 4 inches. It is compact, yet is more advanced compared to other readers that you may come across.

But if you are into cool features, you’re probably most excited about the possibility of a flexible screen. While it hasn’t been confirmed by Sony, the  manual for the device does state that many of the parts are flexible. This has opened up some speculation that the device may have a bendable and indestructible  screen, a new technology of which Sony may be trying to get in on the ground floor.

While all the hearsay can certainly spice things up, the facts about both the Sony PRS-600 and the Sony PRS – 300 are also mighty fascinating as well. The PRS-600 allows freehand writing using a stylus, and comes with a dictionary, a library suite compatible for Mac and PC, 380 MB storage capacity which can possibly be expanded, and up to 7,500 pages of battery life. Given its affordable price, the PRS-600 is looking to be one impressive gadget. While the specifics are still incomplete at this time, it does seem like the Kindle could be in for some heavy competition. The Sony PRS-600 and Sony PRS-300 are about to hit the market and they seem to have every intention of doing so with a bang. Is it the end of the Kindle 2 era?

The first reason is simply because of health concerns. From junior high all the way through college, students have to bear the burden of several classes-worth of books, some of those books being considerable in size. This can be a major problem as it can lead to a kid being physically worn out by the end of the day or developing back problems later on. The problem is so severe that some companies have designed their backpacks after heavy-load camping packs to help reduce lower back strain. If all of a kid’s books were on a light ereader they would never forget one and they wouldn’t have to lug around 50 pounds on their back all day.

The second reason why ebook readers would be a good substitute for a backpack of books is its practicality. College students wait in long lines every start of the semester just to get the books they need, often trying to get first shot at second-hand but in-good-condition books. Then at the end of the semester, they line up again to get these books sold. With an ebook reader, there would be no need for all those long lines because you can download books wirelessly in minutes. We all know that to the diligent student, savings in time can go a long way in pursuing other important activities.

Cost is another great, if not obvious, reason to make the switch. While a 400 to 500-dollar ebook reader may not seem like a savings, it pales in comparison to what the typical student will spend on books. Depending on their major, some students may even spend that much on just one book! The ebook reader offers the opportunity to cut back on long term spending by making one investment. And nothing is worse than waiting an hour in line to sell your hundred dollar book back only to get nothing more than lunch money in return.

There are already enough hassles for students; dealing with dozens of heavy and cumbersome books doesn’t have to be one of them. With an electronic device instead of all the books, students will be able to face their classes with a little bit more energy and a little bit less stress at wondering if they brought the right book. Teachers would also stand to benefit from ebooks as they no longer have to worry about their students being able to find what they need. It’s all digital and there are endless copies available. Given what students stand to gain, it seems like a no-brainer for campuses to start supporting electronic book readers.

If you’re looking for the cheapest price for an ebook reader, you won’t find one that only costs a hundred bucks or so. You would need to spend a little over 200 dollars. With this amount, you’ll be able to buy a typical ereader which has the basic features. However, this price may not be enough to get one that has a longer battery life and you probably might have to get a more advanced model. For better options, you may have to spend about 500 dollars. One of the advanced models that you may come across is the Kindle DX, which has some of the best features in an e-reader. The more you pay for the device the better features you get. Another high-end alternative that has a lot of add-ons packed in is the Flepia which may costs more than 1000 dollars.

Whether you spend 200 dollars or five times that, the important thing is you get the ebook device with the features you need. Otherwise, it would all be a big waste of money. A battery that lasts long and a screen that’s easy on your eyes are some of the basic things that you would want to look into. If possible, try using the device before making the purchase. Even the most pricey ebook readers may not be the perfect fit for you.

More often, what is left unnoticed when it comes to its features is the reader’s file compatibility. For example, not all readers are capable of reading PDF files, which is one of the most popular file format nowadays. This would then limit the libraries that you may get your ebooks from. If you opt to use Sony readers, they would have a library which has about a hundred thousand books, while Amazon’s Kindle would allow you to gain access to over 250,000 books.

It doesn’t have to be a difficult process to choose an ereader, you just have to know what to look for. Getting the most expensive model may not be the  wisest choice for you. While the Flepia may come with a really nice touch screen, can you really justify spending about 1,000 dollars for it? That is a question that only  you can answer. No one can make the decision about which one is correct for you except for you. Don’t just look for the one with the most features, the best ebook reader is the one that suits your needs without  breaking your budget

Some say that the change is a good thing for the newspaper industry. The printed paper has been around since Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick published its first, and last, edition in 1690. Now that the digital age has revolutionized almost every other facet of human life, the paper is simply falling into place. Many people see the trend as inevitable and think that it would be unwise if papers were to resist. Instead, opting to go where the momentum leads them may allow papers to get to readers more easily and with less waste. Hopefully, this will entice people to pick up their subscriptions again.

However, there are those who say that newspapers are making a mistake by putting their hopes in the Amazon Kindle DX. Most newspapers have already spent the money to take their publications online. They make their money back through advertising revenue since the online publications are free to read by anyone. Now, they want to charge people to read that same free content on their Kindle rather than their computer. Some analysts see this as a waste of time and money that could be the dagger in the heart of the newspaper industry. While it is hard to imagine newspapers disappearing forever, pseudo-journalism such as blogging has already displaced a great deal of trained news reporters.

If more newspapers do turn to the Kindle DX to save their publication, it may spark a renewed interest in the news. The Kindle is already catching on as a phenomenon in the reading world, letting people take thousands of their favorite books wherever they go, as any Kindle DX review will tell you. By offering live updates to popular subscriptions, the Kindle makes it easier than ever to read the paper. You don’t have to get yours out of the mailbox on cold mornings and you don’t have to worry about the environmental impact of all that paper. You don’t even have to wait for your computer to boot up in order to read your favorite news column. You just turn on the Kindle and it’s right there waiting for you.

Now that’s what I would call convenience. But is it enough to save the newspaper industry? Only time will tell.

List down the advantages of the DX and you’ll find yourself with a rather long list. The hype surrounding it during its release had some basis after all. First, the Kindle DX sports a huge screen with an auto-rotate feature, and natively supports PDF documents. All these make for a great device for reading newspapers, illustration-heavy books, tables, charts, and maps. Its 4GB of hard drive is large enough for your entire library and then some. The DX also has the sleek design of the Kindle 2 but with a much improved look and feel, and better placement of buttons.

The Kindle DX still has to deal with some issues though, some of which are not found on the device itself. One big complaint users have is the use of Digital Rights Management (DRM) which Amazon has chosen to implement with the DX. Although widely-used before, DRM is now somewhat an outdated method of protecting material, yet it limits the documents that you are able to access on your Kindle. Users find that many of their files will not work with the DX and so one would be forced to buy most reading content from Amazon.

There are also complaints about the organizational abilities, or lack thereof, with the DX. If you have a huge library, your options for sorting and managing  your files are limited, making your library hard to navigate. As always, the price must be discussed. The DX is a luxury that many readers just cannot  afford, costing nearly as much as a small laptop.

All that taken into account, it’s time to take a step back and consider if the Kindle DX is worth having. True, it is one of the most pricey gadgets around given the fact that it’s more of a hobby gadget than necessity, but the features that also come with it as an ebook reading device certainly can’t be easily dismissed. It may have its share of flaws which are quite off-putting for some, but these flaws do not affect 100% of buyers. The bottom line is, the Kindle DX may not be for everyone just yet, but for most of those privileged to own one, their purchase was worth the price.

But is all this popularity well-founded or is it just hype brought on by a new piece of technology? To be fair, it is a bit of both. The Kindle is far from a perfect device and it won’t be replacing the paper book just yet, but it does offer the best possible way to take your books, and lots of them, wherever you want to go. That portability is something you just cannot find with normal books. And even though the Kindle DX is big, roughly the dimensions of a sheet of paper but considerably thicker, it can bring over 3,000 books with it. You would need quite a backpack to carry a library that big with you.

The Kindle 2 has plenty of competition from other portable ebook reader, but the new Kindle DX is in a category all its own. Amazon has built a reader that is an improvement over the competition in almost every way. Whether it is more storage, an easier-to-read screen or the rotating views ala the iPhone, the Kindle DX is unmatched in its features. But it remains unmatched in its price as well.

The cost is probably the key reason many people don’t have a DX and perhaps why many people never will. At nearly 500 dollars, you would expect the ebook reader to do, or come with, a lot more. You don’t get a cover, you don’t get any free books, you can only view in grayscale and you end up with a device that is extremely limited due to copy protection. If you pay so much, why can’t you get a few extras thrown in?

Since the Kindle is a fairly new device, it still hasn’t completely broken into the market. Although it is the most popular one, the Kindle still can’t offer its internet connection service outside the country. Once the Kindle is more established, this is likely to change. For now, many people just see it as a fancy way to read books. But it wasn’t so long ago that the iPod was just a fancy way to listen to music. Now, it is one of the most widely spread pieces of technology you can find. The Kindle remains revolutionary in what it offers. Eventually, it is hard to imagine that paper books will not be replaces. For now, it is still a luxury to many people, but as it discovers its territory in the marketplace, more and more homes will be losing the bookshelf and getting a Kindle.

The Kindle 2 is the older of the two units and as such, has slightly less to offer in terms of size and capability. It is a smaller device that measures 8″ x  5.3″ x 0.36″ with a 6″ diagonal screen. At only 10.2 ounces, slightly more than half a pound, it is a perfect handheld ebook reader. And when you bear in mind that its 2GB hard drive can hold roughly 1,500 books, it’s hard to  imagine you would ever find yourself without a good book at your side. The Kindle 2 sells for 259 dollars right now, making it way more affordabe than the Kindle DX.

Now enter the new Kindle DX. So what does it bring to the table besides its high price? For one, it takes reading to a whole new level by its bigger size at 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″ and an impressive 9.7-inch screen that auto-rotates. Go from portrait to landscape mode by just turning the device in your hand. This makes it a great device for reading newspapers and books that come with illustrations, and looking over charts and maps. With that size though, it also tips the scale at 18.9 ounces, nearly twice that of the Kindle 2.

The Kindle DX has twice the capacity to hold books, boasting of a 4GB hard drive. It can also natively read PDF files which is a huge convenience as the previous models required file conversion. All these features are available at the price of 489 dollars.

Just because the Kindle DX is the newer version doesn’t necessarily mean it is the better one. It may have plenty of features the Kindle 2 doesn’t, but the Kindle 2 has size on its side. The DX works well at home, but the Kindle 2 still wins out in terms of portability. The price difference may be a head-turner as well. While the DX has a lot more to offer, the Kindle 2 is still a great ebook reader and costs quite a bit less. For many people, the Kindle 2 may have all the features they need. It still replaces crumbling old books or the dozen textbooks in your backpack. Whichever one suits you best, you cannot really go wrong with Amazon’s ebook readers.
