A digital camera accessory you should purchase is a spare memory card. What is a memory card?

Fortunately, prices of memory cards have come down dramatically in recent times.

What type of card your camera takes, and how large a memory card you wish to buy.

What memory card type does my camera use?

Memory Card Speed

Another feature to keep in the back of your mind when purchasing a new memory card is the card’s speed. The faster your memory card speed, the faster your camera can write it’s image to the card, and the quicker you can take another photo. The actual speed will be the LOWEST of either your camera’s fastest transfer speed (see your camera’s manual) and the memory card’s speed.

How many memory cards do I need?

I recommend you have at least two memory cards for your camera.

Care of cards

More expensive cards tend to withstand more pounding.

Other Memory Card Tips

- If you transfer lots of images to your computer, purchase a card reader. – Contrary to popular opinion, airport x-ray machines will not damage your camera’s memory cards. – Turn off your camera when inserting or removing memory cards. Taking the memory card out while the camera is writing to the card could wreck both your card and camera.

Making the Most of Digital Camera Memory Cards

Executive Summary about Digital Camera Memory Cards by Dave Saunders

If you are new to digital cameras, the digital camera memory cards are the most important parts of any digital camera, without which they may not work at all.

Something many new digital camera owners find counter-intuitive is that bigger is not always better with a digital memory card. The speed that your camera writes new pictures to the digital memory card is partially dependant on the transfer speed of the digital camera but is also dependant on factors in the memory card itself. Memory cards that have “buffers” can take the data into a faster type of memory and then transfer the data from there to the slower “flash memory” which provides the main storage of almost all digital camera memory cards.

When you delete an image from the memory card of your digital camera, the flash memory is “reconfigured” because of special issues having to do with how this memory stores data.

Now the question arises-how many memory cards are enough for your camera? On an average basis, you must have at least two memory cards for your digital camera.

Most professional photographers choose to carry about four to six memory cards. Because memory cards can malfunction (just like traditional film canisters, but not as often), you should choose to have at least two memory cards at all times.

How to Choose a Digital Memory Cards

Selecting memory cards for digital cameras can be tough. The quality and number of images depends on the type and size of digital camera memory card you choose. Digital cameras store images on thin, stamp-size memory cards. You need a high-capacity digital camera memory card to store a reasonable number of images. Cards are relatively inexpensive. Small cards, such as 512 MB, should be used only for low megapixel cameras and JPEG files. You need to buy the right type of card for your camera. If it did come with a card, that card is likely way too small. Review more information on digital camera memory and get the right card for your camera!

Getting the Most From Your Digital Camera Memory Card

Executive Summary about Digital Memory Cards by Kevin Rockwell

One of the important components of a digital camera is the memory card. Most digital cameras come with quite a low amount of memory and it is always better to include the cost of a memory card while purchasing a camera. Also, remember that if the resolution of your camera is high, then you will also need a high capacity memory card.

There are several types of memory cards available.

  • Compact Flash Memory Card: Compact Flash is a relatively cheap memory card.
  • Secure Digital & Multimedia Cards: Commonly known as the SD card, these cards are one of the smallest memory cards which are available today.
  • Memory Stick: The memory stick is an invention by Sony.
  • Card Reader: Once you have purchased a memory card for yourself, you will also need a card reader in order to transfer your pictures onto your laptop or PC. Don’t buy into a camera system if you feel the memory card will not accommodate your photo taking needs.
