Are you thinking of buying a new digital camera? How do megapixels and digital camera resolution compare to film camera resolution?

Some of the first digital cameras had resolution of 480 x 640 pixels. The one megapixel digital cameras have a resolution of 1280 by 960. In a digital photographic print, 300 dots per inch is considered the standard for small prints. A 3 megapixel camera will have a resolution of about 2048 x 1536. A 5.3 megapixel camera has a resolution of about 3008 x 1960.

A good six megapixel camera can surpass 35mm quality in detail. A 6.3 megapixel camera has a resolution of about 3088 x 2056.

What about seven and eight megapixel cameras? An eight megapixel camera approaches the quality of the professional medium format camera. Digital cameras with resolutions of 10 to 13 megapixels are well in the quality range of good 120mm professional cameras. There are professional digital camera systems with resolutions of 20,40, and even a hundred megapixels.

Megapixel Cameras: How Many Megapixels Do You Need?

There are literally hundreds of models of digital cameras out on the market today.

Megapixels: The More the Merrier

What are megapixels anyway?

The more pixels in the image, the more detail the camera can capture.

How many megapixels do you need?

4 megapixel cameras allow you to achieve excellent photo quality for any picture size up to 8×10. High megapixels cameras use up lots of memory. If you have a 6 megapixel camera, for that same 32mb, you’ll only be able to fit 20 pictures. Higher megapixels leads to higher storage card costs. The camera industry promotes megapixel ratings as though they are a measure of photo quality, and lots of customers fall for it. Megapixels measure the maximum size of each photo. For example, a six-megapixel camera captures pictures made up of six million tiny dots, a 12-megapixel is made up of 12 million dots – and so on.

In reality, there are really bad twelve-megapixel images, just as there are fantastic six-megapixel shots.

Six megapixels will do the job really well.

It’s worth noting that large files take a long time to download, so photos intended purely for display on the computer (the Web, e-mail, slideshows) – need very few pixels.

If it’s gallery quality prints, then go for the highest megapixel you can.

Digital Cameras: How Many Pixels Do I Need?

Executive Summary about Digital Camera Megapixel by Marty Rubenski

Nowadays, even 5.0 megapixel cameras are affordable, even for casual snapshots.

Higher megapixel cameras do have some drawback. A basic 5.0 megapixel camera currently runs between $200 and $300. A 1.2 megapixel camera can be had for less than $50. A 32 MByte memory card will hold around a hundred 1.2 megapixel pictures. This drops right down to around 60 pictures for 2.0 megapixels and to around 40 pictures for a 3.0 megapixel model. The larger, the number of pixels, the larger the file size. The following chart shows sample file sizes, typical resolution and maximum print size for different pixel counts stored as high-quality JPEG files:

Pixels – - – File Size – - – Resolution – - – Print Size

(mp)            (MB)               (…x…)                 (..R)

Most computers will only display the 2.0 megapixel image (at most) without scrolling, so you may find yourself resizing all your pictures – or not using the maximum resolution of your camera – if you have a 5.0 megapixel camera.
